Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) Rate — Who Sets Dubai's Gold Price?

Every jewellery shop in Dubai displays the same gold rate. Here is who publishes it — the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group — how the number is calculated from the international spot price, and when it updates each day.

Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) Rate — Who Sets Dubai's Gold Price?

Walk down the Gold Souk in Deira and every electronic price board shows the same numbers. That is not a coincidence — Dubai's retail gold rate is published centrally by the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG), the trade body behind the famous "Dubai — City of Gold" branding. This guide explains who the DGJG is, how its rate is calculated, when it updates and why the board rate is not quite the price you pay at the counter. For the current numbers, our gold rate today page tracks the Dubai retail rate for all karats.

What Is the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group?

The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (also seen as the Dubai Jewellery Group) is a non-profit trade association representing Dubai's gold and jewellery retailers, wholesalers, bullion dealers and manufacturers. It operates the official Dubai City of Gold website and, most importantly for shoppers, publishes the suggested retail gold jewellery rate that member stores across the emirate display and follow.

The rate is issued in AED per gram for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K gold, in coordination with Dubai's Commercial Compliance & Consumer Protection arm (part of the Department of Economy & Tourism). That government oversight is why the rate works as a genuine benchmark: licensed jewellers display it on standardised boards and are not permitted to sell the metal content below it, which protects both shops and consumers from price games.

How the DGJG Rate Is Calculated

The published rate is not invented — it is derived step by step from the international bullion market:

  1. Start with the global spot price — gold trades worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce (the LBMA benchmark).
  2. Convert to dirhams — the UAE dirham is pegged to the dollar at 3.6725, so the ounce price is multiplied by the peg.
  3. Convert to grams — one troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, so the AED ounce price is divided by 31.1035.
  4. Apply purity — 24K is taken as pure; 22K is 91.6% of the 24K figure, 21K is 87.5%, and 18K is 75%.
  5. Add a small retail margin — the board rate sits slightly above the raw spot conversion, covering the retail supply chain.

We walk through this same maths with worked examples in how gold price is calculated in Dubai, and our gold calculator applies today's live rate to any weight and karat automatically.

When Does the Rate Update?

The DGJG issues the suggested retail rate three times every day — at approximately 9:00 AM, 1:30 PM and 6:00 PM UAE time — so board prices track the international market through the trading day. Between those fixes, the international spot price keeps moving; that is why our live gold price page can differ slightly from a shop board printed at the last fix. If gold is moving fast, an afternoon fix can be visibly higher or lower than the morning one — worth knowing if you are timing a large purchase.

Why Every Jeweller Shows the Same Rate

Because members adhere to the published rate for the metal itself, the gram price at a brand showroom in a mall and a small trader in the Gold Souk is the same at any given fix. Competition happens elsewhere: making charges (the labour cost added per gram or per piece), design, buy-back terms and promotions. That is the single most useful fact for a first-time buyer — do not shop around for a better gram rate; shop around for better making charges. Our comparison of Joyalukkas, Malabar and Kalyan rates in Dubai shows how the big chains differ in practice.

"Dubai City of Gold" — Why You See That Name

Searches like "Dubai City of Gold rate" lead back to the same organisation: City of Gold is the DGJG's long-running promotional identity for Dubai's gold trade, and its official rate site carries that name. So the "City of Gold rate", the "Dubai Jewellery Group rate" and the "DGJG rate" are all the same number — the one on every shop board, and the one we track on our rate page.

DGJG Board Rate vs International Spot Price

Two honest reasons the Dubai board rate never exactly equals the headline international price you see on financial news:

  • Timing — the board updates at three fixed times daily, while spot trades continuously.
  • Retail margin — the suggested retail rate includes a modest premium over the wholesale spot conversion.

The gap is normally small and stable. If a shop quotes a gram rate meaningfully above the current board rate, ask why — and if a quote is below board rate for the metal itself, treat it as a red flag rather than a bargain.

What You Actually Pay at the Counter

Your receipt in Dubai is built from three parts: metal value (weight × board rate for the karat) + making charges + 5% VAT on jewellery (tourists can reclaim most VAT through the Planet refund scheme). The DGJG rate only fixes the first part. Before you buy, price the piece with our gold calculator, then compare the making charges — that is where identical bangles can differ by hundreds of dirhams between shops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who sets the gold rate in Dubai?

The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) publishes the suggested retail gold rate for Dubai, issued in coordination with Dubai's Commercial Compliance & Consumer Protection department. Licensed jewellers display this rate and price the metal content from it.

How often does the DGJG gold rate change?

Three times daily — at roughly 9:00 AM, 1:30 PM and 6:00 PM UAE time — following the international bullion market. Live spot prices move continuously between fixes.

Is the DGJG rate the same in all seven emirates?

The DGJG benchmark is set for Dubai, but retail gram rates across the UAE track the same underlying market and are effectively identical from Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah on any given day.

What is the "Dubai City of Gold" gold rate?

The same thing as the DGJG rate — City of Gold is the group's official branding, and its rate site publishes the daily board numbers for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K.

Why is the Dubai board rate different from the international spot price?

The board rate is refreshed only at fixed times and includes a small retail margin over the raw spot-to-AED conversion, so it usually sits slightly above live spot and can lag fast moves between fixes.

Can a jeweller in Dubai charge me more than the DGJG rate?

For the metal itself, shops price from the board rate; what varies is the making charge added on top, plus 5% VAT on jewellery. Always ask for the metal value and making charge as separate lines on the receipt.
