Tola vs Gram — Which Does the Gold Souk Use?
Dubai's Gold Souk officially prices and weighs gold in grams — scales are calibrated in grams and the DGJG publishes per-gram rates. However, dealers who serve Indian and Pakistani customers are very familiar with tola and will readily convert for you. When comparing prices, always confirm whether a quoted price is per gram or per tola — this confusion is one of the most common sources of overpaying at the Gold Souk.
Is a 10g Sovereign the Same as a Tola?
No. A 1-sovereign gold coin (used in Indian and Gulf jewellery tradition) = 8 grams. A tola = 11.66 grams. They are different weights. A 1-sovereign piece is approximately 68.6% of one tola.
