How to Calculate Zakat on Gold in Dubai

Zakat (زكاة) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — a mandatory annual charity of 2.5% of a Muslim's accumulated wealth above the Nisab threshold. In the UAE, with one of the world's highest per-capita gold holdings, Zakat on gold is particularly significant.

Nisab Threshold in Dubai (2024)

The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must have before Zakat becomes obligatory. There are two ways to calculate Nisab:

Gold Nisab: 85 grams of 24K gold. At current Dubai prices (~AED 290/g), this equals approximately AED 24,650.
Silver Nisab: 595 grams of silver. At current rates, this equals approximately AED 11,000–12,000.

Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab as it is more inclusive and helps more Muslims fulfill their Zakat obligation.

Zakat on Gold Jewellery

There are different scholarly opinions on Zakat for gold jewellery worn regularly. The Hanafi school holds that Zakat is due on all gold regardless of use. The Shafi'i and Maliki schools have varying conditions. For gold jewellery held for investment or not regularly worn, Zakat is almost universally due.
