How to Read Gold Hallmarks in Dubai – Complete Authentication Guide

Why Hallmarks Matter When Buying Gold in Dubai

Dubai is one of the world's most trusted gold trading centres — but only because of its strict hallmarking regulations. A gold hallmark is an official mark stamped onto a piece of gold jewellery or bullion to certify its purity, and under UAE law, all gold articles above 1 gram sold commercially must carry an approved hallmark. Knowing how to read these marks protects you from overpaying for under-karated gold.

The Four Key Hallmarks Found on Dubai Gold

1. The Fineness Number (Most Important)

This three-digit number tells you exactly how much gold is in the piece per 1,000 parts:

StampKaratGold Content
99924K99.9%
91622K91.6%
87521K87.5%
75018K75.0%
58514K58.5%
3759K37.5%

2. The Assay Office Mark

Dubai's Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) and accredited third-party assay offices issue test marks confirming independent verification of purity. Look for an official shield or oval shape alongside the fineness number. This confirms the gold was tested by an independent body, not just the manufacturer.

3. The Maker's Mark

Every licensed gold manufacturer or retailer in Dubai has a registered maker's mark — a unique symbol or initials identifying who made the piece. This is important for traceability. If you ever need to dispute a purity claim, the maker's mark identifies the responsible party.

4. The Date Letter (Optional)

Some higher-end pieces, particularly imported European jewellery, carry a date letter indicating the year of manufacture. This is less common on Dubai-made pieces but is standard on UK and Italian hallmarked gold.

Where to Find Hallmarks on Jewellery

  • Rings: Inside the band, usually near the sizing seam.
  • Necklaces and chains: On the clasp or a small tag attached near the clasp.
  • Bangles and bracelets: On the inner surface or on a small attached disc.
  • Earrings: On the post or clip mechanism.
  • Gold bars: Embossed on the face of the bar with fineness, weight, and refinery name.

Mandatory Hallmarking in Dubai – UAE Law

Since the UAE Federal Law on Precious Metals and Stones came into full effect, all gold articles sold in the UAE must:

  • Carry the legal fineness stamp (999, 916, 875, 750, or 585)
  • Be tested by an ESMA-accredited assay office
  • Be registered with the Dubai Economy and Tourism (DET) trade registry

Selling unhallmarked gold or gold stamped with an incorrect karat is a criminal offence in the UAE. This legal framework is why Dubai's gold is among the most reliably purity-verified in the world.

How to Verify Gold Purity Yourself

While hallmarks are reliable, savvy buyers use additional checks:

  • Magnet test: Gold is not magnetic. If a piece is attracted to a strong magnet, it contains significant amounts of iron or other magnetic metals — a red flag.
  • Acid test: A small scraping of gold is applied to a testing stone and nitric acid is dropped on it. The reaction (or lack thereof) reveals purity. Many reputable Dubai shops will do this in front of you for free.
  • XRF scanner: Larger dealers and assay offices use X-ray fluorescence scanners that read gold purity in seconds without damaging the piece. You can request this service at most Dubai Municipality-certified jewellers for a small fee.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • No visible hallmark on a piece over 1 gram
  • A seller who refuses to show you the weight before pricing
  • Fineness stamp that looks scratched or recently added
  • Prices significantly below the DGJG published rate without clear explanation
  • Pressure to buy quickly without time to inspect

Legitimate Dubai gold dealers welcome scrutiny — they are operating in a regulated market and have nothing to hide. Any reluctance to show hallmarks clearly should be treated as a serious warning sign.
