What Making Charge Is Fair for Bangles?
- Plain, machine-made bangles: 5–8% — this is the Gold Souk standard. Do not accept more than 10% for simple plain bangles.
- Carved / embossed pattern bangles: 8–14%
- Openwork / filigree bangles: 15–22%
- Kundan or meenakari inlay bangles: 25–35%
When buying a set of 12 or more bangles, your negotiating position is strong. For bulk orders, making charges of 5–7% on plain bangles are achievable.
Size and Weight: How to Estimate Before You Go
Bangles are sold by inner diameter (size) and weight. A standard adult bangle for an average-sized wrist is approximately 2.5–2.6 inches (63–66mm) inner diameter. Heavier bangles (10–15g) are more commonly purchased for investment value; lighter ones (4–6g) for everyday wear.
To estimate cost before your visit: multiply your target weight in grams by today's 22K per-gram rate from our gold rate page, then add your target making charge percentage.
22K vs 21K Bangles — Which Should You Buy?
In the Dubai Gold Souk, both 22K (916) and 21K (875) bangles are widely available. Indian-style bangles are almost always 22K, while Arab-style bangles (Khaleeji design) are more commonly 21K. For resale value within India, 22K is strongly preferred. For everyday UAE wear or Gulf market resale, 21K is perfectly accepted and slightly less expensive.
Tips for Buying Bangles at the Gold Souk
- Try on before buying — bangle sizes are fixed and cannot be adjusted easily. Check the inner circumference fits comfortably over the widest part of your hand.
- Weigh the set before agreeing — ask the dealer to place the full set on the scale with you watching. Write down the weight.
- Ask about the hallmark — every bangle should have a 916, 875, or 750 stamp. If you cannot find it, ask the dealer to show you.
- Buy in sets when possible — buying 4 or 12 bangles at once gives you meaningful leverage on making charges.
- Read our gold buying guide for the full VAT refund process — non-UAE residents can reclaim most of the 5% VAT on jewellery at Dubai Airport.
