Exchanging Old Gold for New in Dubai: Deductions, Wastage & the Smart Math

Almost every jeweller in Dubai will take your old gold as payment toward new jewellery — but the math behind the counter decides whether you win or lose. Here is exactly how old-gold exchange works, which deductions are legitimate, which are padding, and how to calculate your break-even before you hand anything over.

Exchanging Old Gold for New in Dubai: Deductions, Wastage & the Smart Math

Walk into any shop in the Deira Gold Souk with an old bangle and you can walk out with a new necklace, paying only the difference. Old-gold exchange is one of the most used — and least understood — transactions in Dubai's gold market. The gap between a fair exchange and a poor one is often 10% of your gold's value, hidden in deductions most customers never question.

How the Exchange Actually Works

The jeweller values your old gold and credits it against the new piece. Four numbers decide the outcome:

  1. Assessed purity of your old gold — established by hallmark stamp and, at proper shops, an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) test done in front of you.
  2. Weight — insist on seeing the digital scale, after stones and non-gold parts are accounted for.
  3. Credit rate — reputable shops credit old gold at (or within a dirham or two of) the day's official rate for its karat. That number is public; check it before you go.
  4. Deductions — where exchanges are won and lost. Legitimate: stone weight, solder joints on repaired pieces, genuinely low-purity findings on testing. Padding: flat "melting fees", vague "wastage" percentages on plain machine-made pieces, or crediting 22K gold at a "used gold" discount without a test.

Then the new piece is priced normally: weight × today's rate + making charges + 5% VAT. Remember that you pay full making charges on the new piece — the making charges you originally paid on the old one are gone forever. That is the true cost of every exchange.

The Break-Even Math (Do This Before You Go)

Use our gold calculator twice:

  • Value of your old gold: weight × karat purity × today's per-gram rate. This is what your metal is worth — anything materially below it needs a specific, testable justification.
  • Cost of the new piece: weight × rate + making charge + VAT.
  • Fair amount to pay = new piece cost − old gold value. If the shop's number is higher, ask them to walk you through each deduction line by line.

Exchange vs Sell-Then-Buy

You are never obliged to exchange at one counter. Selling your old gold for cash at the best of three quotes — see our guide to selling gold in Dubai — and then buying the new piece wherever making charges are lowest often beats a same-shop exchange. Shops know exchange customers rarely compare, and price accordingly. The exception: festival-season exchange promotions with genuine zero-deduction terms can be excellent — read the small print on how they credit your old gold.

Five Rules for a Fair Exchange

  • Know the day's rate before entering — it is set nationally and non-negotiable, so any lowball starts with the credit rate.
  • Ask for XRF testing in front of you — never accept "looks like 21K" by eye when your hallmark says 22K.
  • Get the deduction list itemised — legitimate deductions have names and weights, not percentages plucked from the air.
  • Negotiate the new piece's making charge — that is where the shop has real margin to give (typical range 3–35% by complexity; see our making charges guide).
  • Walk away once — quotes have a way of improving when an informed customer heads for the door of a souk with 300 competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I exchange old gold for new in Dubai?

Yes — virtually all jewellers in the Gold Souk and malls accept old gold as credit toward new purchases. Your old gold should be credited near the day's official rate for its tested karat; you pay the difference plus making charges and VAT on the new piece.

What deductions are normal when exchanging old gold?

Stone weight, solder from repairs, and genuine purity shortfalls found on testing. Flat melting fees and blanket "wastage" percentages on plain pieces are padding — ask for an itemised list and compare another shop.

Is it better to exchange gold or sell it for cash first?

Selling for cash at the best of three quotes, then buying wherever making charges are lowest, frequently beats a single-counter exchange. Exchange wins mainly during genuine zero-deduction promotions.

Do I get back the making charges I paid on my old jewellery?

No — making charges are labour, not metal, and are never recovered when selling or exchanging. Only the gold content has enduring value, which is why low-making-charge pieces hold value best.
