Deira Gold Souk: How to Get There, Bargain & Buy Smart

Deira Gold Souk: The Essential Facts

The Gold Souk in Deira is not a single building — it is a cluster of covered arcades and surrounding streets, home to over 300 jewellery shops packed into a 200-metre stretch. At any moment, the souk displays an estimated 10 tonnes of gold on its shelves — more than many national reserves.

It is Dubai's oldest continuous market, operating for over 100 years, and was recently added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list as part of Dubai's traditional market culture.

Getting to the Deira Gold Souk

By Metro (Best Option)

  • Take the Green Line to Al Ras station
  • Exit and walk approximately 5 minutes west toward the creek
  • Follow signs for "Gold Souk" — it is well signposted
  • Metro runs from 5:30 AM – midnight (Saturday–Wednesday), 5:30 AM – 1 AM (Thursday–Friday)

By Abra (Water Taxi — Most Atmospheric)

  • From Bur Dubai side: take an abra from Bur Dubai Old Souk Abra Station
  • Cost: AED 1 per person (pay on board)
  • Journey time: 5 minutes across Dubai Creek
  • Arrive at Deira Old Souk Abra Station — the Gold Souk is a 3-minute walk

By Taxi / Ride Share (Uber, Careem)

  • Tell the driver: "Gold Souk, Deira" or "Al Ras, near Gold Souk"
  • Drop-off on Sikkat Al Khail Road or Al Soor Street — both have souk access points
  • Uber/Careem usually AED 12–25 from Downtown Dubai

By Bus

  • Routes C10, C11, 11, 11A, 11B, 19 all serve the Al Ras area
  • Check the RTA Journey Planner app for real-time routes

Souk Layout: How to Navigate

The Gold Souk is divided into three main areas:

  • Covered arcade (main souk): The iconic roofed walkway with the densest concentration of gold shops — primarily 22K Indian and Arab-style jewellery
  • Old Baladiya Street shops: Slightly older shops with more traditional designs; often lower making charges
  • Surrounding streets: Additional shops including some that specialise in 18K, diamonds, and wholesale

There is no strict organisation by karat or type — shops sell mixed inventory. The covered main arcade is the best starting point.

How to Bargain: The Correct Approach

The gold price per gram is non-negotiable — it is publicly set by the DGJG and all shops charge the same. What you negotiate is the making charge:

  1. Establish the gold rate first: Ask "What is the gold price today for 22K?" If the answer matches the DGJG rate shown on goldratesindubai.com, the shop is legitimate. If they quote significantly higher, leave.
  2. Ask for the making charge: "How much is the making charge for this piece?" Get the per-gram rate, not a total.
  3. Counter-offer: If they say AED 15/gram, offer AED 10/gram. For simple machine-made pieces, AED 5–8/gram is achievable.
  4. Use competition: "The shop next door quoted me AED 10/gram for the same design" — often true, and effective.
  5. Walk away slowly: If the counter-offer is rejected, begin walking toward the door. A significant proportion of the time, the shopkeeper will call you back with an improved offer.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Bring AED cash — useful for small purchases and sometimes gives leverage for negotiation
  • Card payments are accepted in most shops
  • Dress modestly — this is a traditional market in a Muslim city
  • Avoid Friday mornings — souk is closed until after Friday prayers (opens around 4 PM)
  • The souk is busiest on weekday evenings (7–10 PM) — go on weekday mornings for the most relaxed experience
  • Drinking water is available at small cafes on the souk's edges
  • Toilets are available in the attached parking structure and at Al Ras Metro station

After the Souk: Nearby Experiences

Spend the rest of your afternoon at the Spice Souk (2 minutes walk), the Textile Souk (across the creek by abra), and walk along the Creek promenade. Old Dubai's atmosphere is completely different from the malls — an experience every visitor to Dubai should have.
