How to Read Gold Hallmarks in Dubai: Authentication Guide

What Is a Gold Hallmark?

A hallmark is an official mark stamped onto gold items to certify their purity. In Dubai, hallmarking is regulated by the Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL), which operates under the Dubai Municipality. Any gold sold in the UAE must display a hallmark indicating its fineness — the proportion of pure gold it contains.

Buying hallmarked gold protects you from fraud and gives you a legal basis for returns or disputes. Always check for hallmarks before purchasing any gold jewellery, coin, or bar in Dubai.

The UAE Fineness Numbers (What the Numbers Mean)

Dubai uses a numeric fineness system based on parts per thousand (‰). These numbers indicate how many grams of pure gold exist in 1,000 grams of the alloy:

  • 999 — 24 karat (99.9% pure gold) — used for bars, coins, some bullion jewellery
  • 958 — 23 karat (95.8% pure) — rare, occasionally found in traditional pieces
  • 916 — 22 karat (91.6% pure) — the most common karat in Dubai's souk
  • 875 — 21 karat (87.5% pure) — popular for Arab-style jewellery
  • 750 — 18 karat (75% pure) — popular for diamond jewellery and luxury pieces
  • 585 — 14 karat (58.5% pure) — less common in Dubai; found in Western-brand shops

UAE and Dubai Hallmark Stamps to Look For

On genuine Dubai-sold gold, you should find:

  • Fineness stamp (e.g., 916, 750, 999) — mandatory on all gold sold in UAE
  • Maker's mark — the jeweller's or manufacturer's unique code registered with the UAE
  • Dubai Municipality mark — a small "DM" or local lab stamp indicating third-party verification
  • Year letter — some pieces include a date letter indicating the year of hallmarking

BIS Hallmark (Indian Gold in Dubai)

A large portion of gold sold in Dubai is manufactured in India. Indian gold carries a BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) hallmark which includes:

  • BIS logo (triangle with initials)
  • Fineness number (916, 750, etc.)
  • Assay centre code
  • Jeweller's unique mark

BIS-hallmarked gold is internationally accepted and indicates genuine Indian government-certified purity.

How to Physically Check the Hallmark

Follow these steps when inspecting gold in a Dubai shop:

  1. Ask for a loupe — request a magnifying glass (10x). Any reputable shop will have one and will allow you to inspect pieces.
  2. Look at clasps and hidden spots — hallmarks are typically stamped on clasps, inside ring shanks, on pendant bails, or at bracelet joints where they are hidden from view.
  3. Check that numbers are deep and clear — genuine stamps are pressed cleanly. Faint, scratched, or smeared numbers are a warning sign.
  4. Match karat to price — if a seller claims 22K gold is priced the same as 18K gold, something is wrong.

Dubai's Electronic Gold Testing

The Dubai Municipality runs free gold purity testing booths at major gold markets, including the Gold Souk in Deira. Staff use X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysers that non-destructively measure gold purity in seconds. If you are unsure about a piece, ask to have it tested before purchasing.

Red Flags: When to Walk Away

  • No visible hallmark or stamp on the piece
  • Seller refuses to allow you to inspect the hallmark under a loupe
  • Price significantly below the daily DGJG rate for that karat
  • Stamps that say "GP" (gold plated) or "GF" (gold filled) — these are not solid gold
  • Weight that seems lighter than expected for the price

In Dubai's regulated gold market, genuine hallmarked gold is the norm. Disputes about purity are rare because the system is well-enforced. Stick to licensed shops in the Gold Souk or mall jewellers, and you are well protected.
